Volunteering With Surfers Healing

Volunteering with Surfers’ Healing

I was fortunate enough to be invited to volunteer for a heartwarming event called Surfers Healing on February 1, 2025, in Mount Maunganui.

Volunteers from across the country gather to create an unforgettable day filled with smiles, courage, and connection. It is hard to describe the feeling of being a part of a special community and sharing a love of surfing with these children. Tina and James were behind the camera to ensure these special moments were captured for the kids.

For the fourth year in a row, we were gifted with perfect little waves and sunshine, making a special day even more beautiful. This year saw a record number of children attending and riding the waves. There were many new faces and returning participants who had enjoyed the event so much they returned for another weekend of surfing.

Paddleboards were the best form of getting the kids out on the water. Providing the stability needed for kids to stand confidently or relax and ride the waves lying down.

I took a young girl named Awan out on the water. Initially shy, as soon as she rode her first wave, she lit up with a smile that never left her face.

Last year, she only felt comfortable surfing one wave, but this time, she was eager for wave after wave. Watching her delight and growing confidence was truly heartwarming — I think I may have gotten as much joy from the experience as she did if not more.

Surfers’ Healing is the original surf camp for children with autism. Many children with autism face sensory overload, where everyday sensations can become overwhelming. The weightlessness and rhythm of the ocean provide a therapeutic and calming experience—a rare respite from sensory challenges.

The event offers children the opportunity to encounter the waves, challenge themselves, and try something completely new. Surfers guided participants onto the water with gentle encouragement. For many, it was their first time surfing—a moment of triumph and pure joy. Watching their faces light up as they conquered the waves was truly incredible.

Surfers’ Healing not only brings joy to children but also gives parents the chance to see their kids thrive in an inclusive and supportive environment. One grateful parent remarked, “To see our child so happy and confident—it’s a gift we’ll never forget.”

It was a privilege to be asked to participate in such an incredible event and I am already looking forward to next year.
